Linear Alpha Olefins (LAO) are alkenes that contain double bonds at the alpha position, the first carbon atom in the chain of a hydrocarbon. The compound’s double bond location makes it more reactive and lends itself to a variety of industrial applications. During oligomerization, linear alpha olefins are produced and used as raw materials for products including detergents, plastics, and adhesives.
Despite their scarcity, linear olefins can still be produced industrially. Olefins are created by thermally cracking oil and gasoline.
The Catalytic Ziegler Process, the Stoichiometric Ziegler Process, and Ethylene Oligomerization all result in the formation of linear alpha olefins. When oligomerizing, lower molecular weight mono-olefins like ethylene are joined to expand the substrate.
The major regions that are contributing to the market development of linear alpha olefins are the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, China, India, South Korea, Australia, the Middle west, and Africa.

Industrial Uses Impacting Linear Alpha olefins Price Trend:
Linear Alpha Olefins are employed in detergent alcohols, lubricants, oilfield chemicals, and plasticizers. The manufacturing of polypropylene and polyethylene uses it extensively as a co-monomer.
When making plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene, linear alpha olefins are frequently employed as co-monomers. It finds its application in end-user industries like automotive and plastics.
Among its many uses, it is also used in the production of polyethylene, the creation of aldehydes, and the creation of fatty acids for plasticisers.
Key Market Players:
• Shell Chemicals
• INEOS
• Chevron Phillips Chemical
News and Events:
• March 29, 2022: ExxonMobil has reported that development on the new linear aloha olefins (LAO) manufacturing facility is underway at its integrated petrochemical complex in Baytown, Texas, and that a mid-2023 commercial start-up is the aim. Once fully operational, the new facility will be able to manufacture about 350,000 metric tonnes of LAO every year.
Exxonmobil will produce 10 high-purity LAO products, which will be sold under the Elevexx brand. Extremely versatile, LAO molecules are employed in a wide range of specialised applications, such as plastic packaging, industrial fluids, high-performance engines, and as the building blocks for surfactants and other specialty chemicals.
